Nintendo facing lawsuit over Wii console
By admin | September 5, 2008
Games giant Nintendo received some unwelcome news when it was revealed that US based firm Hillcrest Labs commenced legal action for copyright infringement. The lawsuit alleges that Nintendo’s top selling Wii devices were using technology that was almost identical to that which had already been developed by the US company.
Hillcrest Labs have requested that US courts impose a ban on the shipping of Wii devices within the US unless Nintendo makes a payment to the company.
Nintendo’s Wii console has easily outsold its competitors in the United States. This has been attributed to cheap prices and the innovation of the game product.
Hillcrest Labs has stressed that it believes that the Japanese gaming giant is in contravention of patent laws and it will vigorously defend its intellectual property rights. Unfortunately, for Nintendo, the lawsuit has been filed just after it lost another legal case based on patent rights and had to fork out $21 million to US based company Anascape.
